In this letter from 2017 al-Barnawi complained to Daesh central about the lack of support given to his group in the region. In particular it points out that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi seemed uninterested in supporting the group financially and militarily. Moreover there were clear issues with the psychological toll on fighters in the Africa region when they saw other groups receiving support, largely they felt “abandoned”.
